It’s great to have another big backer of Aurora Question 2B. The Denver Post today made a strong endorsement, the following is an excerpt from today’s endorsement.
Endorsement: Vote “yes” on Aurora 2B
Oct. 24, 2012
Voters in Aurora have at least one easy choice to make this year.
They should vote “yes” to approve a $71.38 million mill-levy override to pay for transportation improvements throughout the city.
The city, via an extension of an existing property tax, would pay for 21 new projects that impact all corners of Colorado’s third-largest city.
The estimate is that 2B would cost a homeowner about $16.20 per year for every $100,000 in assessed valuation. But because 2B is an extension of an existing tax, the net effect is that voters will not see an increase in their property taxes.
As such, extending the tax is a largely painless way for residents to invest in the city moving forward.
Notably, Aurora would use the money to make transportation improvements adjacent to both Buckley Air Force Base and the Anschutz Medical Campus.
The emphasis on investing in transportation around two critical employment centers in Aurora makes smart sense in the current economy.
